Psychological factors can cause impotence. Attributed psychological factors include: stress, anxiety, guilt, depression, low self-esteem, and fear of sexual failure.

The treatment of psychologically based impotence involves techniques that help to decrease the anxiety which is associated with intercourse. The partner of a patient may also contribute in this treatment, allowing for a gradual development of intimacy and stimulation. Such techniques have been proven to help relieve anxiety as well in patients whose erectile dysfunction is caused due to physical problems.
